A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM
We are a multidisciplinary University Team composed by over 50 of the best enrolled undergraduate, PhDs, and Master’s students from the three Faculties of Architecture, of Civil and Industrial Engineering and of Political Sciences, Sociology, and Communication of SAPIENZA University of Rome, coordinated and supported by key Faculty members, and lead by Faculty Advisor and Project Manager Prof. Marco Casini.
Our approach is based on multidisciplinary skills and teamwork in order to enjoy the competition and stimulate innovation, research and communication capacity through a comprehensive and creative way of thinking.
Team members are organized in 5 main focus groups according to the goals of the project and the Solar Decathlon contests: Smart Shape, Smart Envelope, Smart Systems, Smart People, and Communication.
SMART SHAPE
This Focus group has the objective to optimize the shape and orientation of the Solar House, the positioning and sizing of its openings and the distribution of interior spaces in order to encourage natural lighting and ventilation, the use of renewable energy and the reduction of energy requirements both at building and urban scale.
Specific goals of the Smart Shape group are to design an attractive, very high energy performance solar powered house fully integrated with Middle East Climate conditions and to propose a living and dwelling model for the Middle East consistently with the Arab tradition and heritage with a modular and replicable building type liable to adapt to different kinds of building fabric in Middle East cities.
Smart Shape research group main activities include: Context Analysis, Architecture, Accessibility and Public Tour, Natural Lighting, Natural ventilation, Vegetation and Landscape, Interior design, Urban planning, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Rendering and drawings.

SMART ENVELOPE
This Focus group has the main objective to optimize both the characteristics of the structure, in order to maximize resiliency and flexibility and reduce construction costs and time, and the performances of the building envelope in order to reduce energy needs and maximize the levels of thermal, acoustic and visual comfort.
Specific goals of the Smart Envelope group are to design an affordable, flexible and expandable building type demonstrating the huge potential of engineered wood construction systems and to develop a cost-effective high performance envelope solution based on the most advanced materials and technologies available on the market.
Smart Envelope research group main activities include: Structural engineering, Façade engineering, Smart Materials, Building physics, Acoustic Design, LCA and LCC, 3D printing, Logistics.

SMART SYSTEMS
This Focus group has the main objective of favoring the use of high efficiency system solutions, the integration of renewable energy sources and the use of advanced building automation systems and Internet of Things (IoT), in order to reduce consumption of primary energy from non-renewable sources and to maximize indoor comfort levels.
Specific goals of the Smart Systems group are to promote the maximum integration of different solar renewable energy sources, identifying the most suitable mix solution for ME Climate, to design a HVAC system based on cutting edge smart meters, self-learning and fully integrated with the home automation system, and to reduce water consumption with an expected saving of more than 65%.
Smart Systems research group main activities include: Renewable energy, Mechanical engineering, Electrical engineering, Energy storage, Water management strategies, Fire, Building Performance Simulations, Comfort conditions, Advanced technology and research.

SMART PEOPLE
This Focus group has the main objective to find strategies to involve and engage building occupants, helping them to become an active part of the ‘building-energy system interaction’, to better manage their energy demand and comfort needs and become ‘smart prosumers’.
Specific goals of the Smart People group are to design a thinking building, perfectly integrated into its environment, connected to the global network and able to communicate with its users and to share its infrastructure with the city’s, acting as founding element for the achievement of future Smart City, in agreement with the comprehensive strategic guidelines and development plans established by Dubai City Authorities.
Smart People research group main activities include: HEMS and IoT, House functioning, Users’ behavior analysis, Waste management strategies, Resilience, security and risk, Smart Mobility, Smart city, Data analytics and cyber security, Facilities management.
